2 Kids, Yoga, and a Camper Van: On the Road with the Nomad Yoga Family

On this episode of the podcast, we sit down with Josh and Jenna of the Nomad Yoga Family to discuss being on the road, traveling with kids and the Digital Nomad life. After traveling separately during and after university and deciding that having a family wasn’t going to affect their love of travel and adventure, Josh and Jenna decided they wanted a different lifestyle to the one they were living in Canada. Rather than stemming from unhappiness in their stable lifestyle, their desire to sell their yoga business and take their family on the road two years ago came from a desire for adventure and something different, and they haven’t looked back since!

Traveling through the west coast of Canada, and parts of the United States and Mexico, Josh and Jenna have taken their business online and have adapted to day to day life traveling in a camper van, including traveling slower to allow their kids to enjoy their downtime, and making the most of 100 square feet of living space!

We chat with Josh and Jenna about all things overland travel, including the specs of their camper van and how they chose it, some of the factors they consider when choosing a place to camp for the night, and their feelings on safety and security driving through countries like Mexico with two young children. We also talk to them about what caused them to want to travel long-term in the first place, and some of the changes they’ve seen in their kids’ personalities since hitting the road two years ago. With the wide range of topics Josh and Jenna cover with us, this is definitely not an episode to miss!

Enjoy!

What we talk about in this episode:

  • How Josh and Jenna first got interested in traveling, first by traveling individually and then deciding that having a family wasn’t going to affect their passion for travel
  • How travel can simplify your existence by getting you to focus on meeting your every day needs, and meet a basic human need to discover and explore
  • How being on the road for so long has now led to the family wanting some 9 – 5 traditional stability, and how to find a balance between the two
  • The reasons that Josh and Jenna decide to start traveling as a family, and how it came not from a place of unhappiness, but rather from wanting a sense from adventure
  • How a family tragedy brought home how finite life is and amplified their priority to change their lifestyle
  • The reaction from their family and friends back home
  • How they went about selling their yoga studio, house and possessions, their recommendation to dive into the process head first, and coming to terms with letting go of possessions with sentimental value
  • How they found their camper van and what it’s like on the road
  • Where they’ve been over the last two years, including the west coasts of Canada, the United States, and many parts of Mexico
  • How one of the goals of their trip was to keep an eye out for some international/entrepreneurial opportunities
  • How traveling with kids limits the number of hours they can drive in a day, and how they’ve implemented a rule where they stop driving at 4pm
  • The mental transition from feeling like you’re on vacation to realizing your trip is day to day life, and how this can affect the pace at which you decide to travel
  • The advantages of changing your scenery and appreciating different types of climates
  • Some of the factors they consider when deciding on a place to camp, like cost, comfort and desirability of the location (they use tools like the ioverlander and allsites apps as well as freecamp.net)
  • Their feelings on security and safety with their kids driving through countries like Mexico, how they’ve managed to feel safe by following some basic precautions
  • Their experience working remotely and living a Digital Nomad lifestyle, and how it doesn’t measure up to the romantic image people sometimes have
  • The importance of finding your marketable strengths and playing to them when building an online business or working remotely
  • What it’s like to travel with kids and the changes they’ve seen in their personalities after traveling for two years, including seeing their son’s increasing confidence in approaching other children on the playground
  • The value of allowing your kids to have true downtime and have their creative side come out to entertain themselves
  • Their upcoming travel plans to make it to Whistler, Canada by July, speak at some conferences in the United States, and try to prioritize some more Canadian travel
