Dark tourism is tourism to the sites of death or atrocities. Places like the concentration camps in Europe, Pearl Harbour, the 9/11 memorial, London Dungeons. If you’ve been traveling for long enough you’ve probably been to a few places like these. How did they make you feel? Sad, angry, maybe confused at how these events could happen? Did you feel uncomfortable being there seeing people taking photos? Amanda and Ryan have both been to a few different sites; The Killing Fields in Cambodia, Cu Chi Tunnels in Vietnam, and Amanda has been to a few on her own (Dachau Concentration Camp, 9/11 Memorial).
On this episode Amanda and Ryan tackle the topic of dark tourism. Why do these sites facinate people? Is it good that we memorialize these sites and turn them into revenue generating attractions? What motivates us to travel to these places? Should you feel an obligation to go see a concentration camp?
