What’s the Messy Truth About First Adventure Trips?

So, you’ve decided to finally do it. Your first outdoor adventure, because the relaxing vacations were getting boring (understandably so). Maybe you picture yourself looking like an outdoor magazine cover, all windswept hair, perfect backpack, striding toward the mountains like you own them. Which, yeah, that sounds amazing and all, but the reality check is that it’s probably going to look more like you wrestling a backpack that’s bigger than your torso while praying your water bottle doesn’t leak on your only pair of clean socks.

And honestly, that is half the fun. Sure, it’s “rustic” but so what? Basically, traveling to your first adventure isn’t just about the hike, the campsite, or the trail. It’s the travel circus that comes before it, the trains, planes, cars, snacks, bags, and “oh no, I definitely forgot something” panic. But it doesn’t have to be a complete disaster either.

Even if there are plenty of TikTok skits out there of people having outdoor disasters, it really doesn’t have to happen like that with you; it’s more about the prep than anything else.

Choose Gear That Can Actually Save Your Sanity

Okay, maybe “sanity” is overkill, but you get the idea. Alright, so, for starters, it’s best to just understand that you really don’t need the fanciest setup for your first trip, but the right gear does make everything smoother. Like, what you see influencers use, or whoever else, well, what they’re doing is probably overkill. Seriously, you just need practical things, not flashy.

For example, you need comfortable shoes that don’t destroy your feet, a backpack that isn’t crushing your shoulders, and a jacket that actually keeps you dry; those are worth every penny. But of course, they can be simple; you don’t need to buy Patagonia-branded anything. You just need what’s practical, but it helps to find a store that offers that, like Fresh Air outdoor store, for example. Honestly, it’s great because instead of having to panic buy random goods that you might think are great due to the price tag, instead, you can just ask questions (in-store, of course).

Don’t Pack Like a Doomsday Prepper

Want to know a rookie mistake everyone makes? Well, it’s overpacking like the world is ending. For example, three coats, six pairs of shoes, and enough granola bars to feed the whole campsite. But seriosuly, you won’t use half of it. Oh, and all that extra junk? Well, you’re the one carrying it. Instead, just pack for what you’ll actually do, not for every scenario your panicked brain invents. If you’re going for a weekend, you don’t need your entire closet. If you’re hiking, you don’t need fancy shoes for dinner. And no, you probably don’t need three flashlights.

Packing cubes help, sure, but only if you’re not stuffing them like overfilled burritos. Instead, you need to be ruthless. Ask yourself, am I going to use this, or am I just scared I’ll need it? Well, nine times out of ten, it’s fear-packing. Oh, and fear-packing is how you end up sweating buckets while dragging a bag that could double as gym equipment. Seriously, you don’t want that.

Just Know that Something will Go Wrong

Remember Murphy’s Law? Yeah, well, it’s not ideal to think about, but that’s the mindset you’ll need to have. Something can and will go wrong. And sure, no one wants to admit, your first adventure trip will not be flawless. Honestly, it’s going to be the furthest thing from flawlessness. So, something will go sideways. Hopefully, it’s something small. Like, maybe you’ll forget your toothbrush. Your bag will get soaked. You’ll pack food and then end up eating fast food anyway. And that’s fine.

But generally speaking, those hiccups are part of the story. Better yet, just understand it’s normal. Yeah, no one brags about the trip where everything was perfect; most people talk about bad news. The funny memories come from the mess, the wrong train stop, the broken zipper, the rainstorm you weren’t ready for. That’s the stuff you’ll laugh about later.

Enjoy the Messy Middle

Everyone wants their first trip to feel polished. It makes sense, because what person wouldn’t, right? But the messy middle is what makes it memorable. The late buses, the heavy bags, the random conversations with strangers, even the terrible snacks, those are the details that make it a story worth telling. Sure, it’s messy, but that’s fine.

And yeah, you’ll roll your eyes at yourself, you’ll regret some packing choices, and you’ll definitely get lost at least once. But you’ll also step off that train, bus, or plane and realize you did it. That’s the goal here, it’s that nice reminder. You survived your first adventure in one piece, with stories that will sound funnier every time you tell them.
