Life Update: Vamos a Mexico

Download directly, on iTunes, or Stitcher.

We’ve always wanted to live longer term in a Spanish speaking country, so after a busy summer traveling across Canada and the United States, we are looking forward to staying true to our nomadic roots and heading to Mexico City this Thursday! Although we’ve had some mixed reactions from family and friends regarding our safety, our friends that have traveled and lived there have nothing but great things to say about the area, and we are looking forward to getting the chance to enjoy some great Mexican food, practicing our Spanish, and getting a chance to establish ourselves and build another home away from home.

With that said, we did need to reconsider our travel plans in light of the recent news of the devastating earthquake, and on this episode we talk about how we discussed our safety concerns and decided to move forward with our travel plans. We also discuss about what we’re looking forward to, the fun event around which we finalized our travel dates, and make a call out to listeners for recommendations and to let us know if they may be in the area to meet up.

Enjoy!

What we talk about in this episode:

  • A recap of what we’ve been up to over the summer in Alberta after we got back from Asia, including getting to be speakers at a cool podcast conference, a trip to Montreal, Toronto and the US, and getting to hike the West Coast trail
  • Our plan to fly to Mexico this upcoming Thursday, and how we decided to travel there because we wanted to live in a Spanish speaking place
  • Deciding to continue with our plans with the news of the recent earthquake
  • The reaction of our family and friends when we shared our plan to travel to Mexico, both positive and negative
  • Our feeling of being desensitized to people reacting to the places we are traveling to solely based on media perception, and how we weigh the opinions of people who have traveled to these places a little more
  • How assessing for your potential safety in the event of a natural disaster differs slightly from taking normal safety precautions when traveling, and can add an extra level of uncertainty because it’s completely out of your control
  • How we assessed the safety risks and made the decision to continue with our travel plans
  • Finalizing our travel dates around a concert in Mexico City, and realizing we liked travel planning this way as it gave us something concrete to plan our trip around
  • What we’re looking forward to: Mexican food, practicing Spanish, getting to explore a new city, the great exchange rate and getting an opportunity to create another home away from home
  • A little bit of language anxiety, but the excitement of getting back into it!
  • Our expectations for where we think we will be ten weeks from now (hint: in Mexico)
  • Our call out to listeners for tips and recommendations for restaurants or things to do via email or Facebook, and to reach out to if you might be in the area over the next few weeks and would like to meet up!
