How to Create While You Travel

Download directly, on iTunes, or Stitcher.

You can gain a lot of value by creating content or a project for yourself to pursue while traveling, and can often end up learning a lot about yourself along the way. Combined with wanting to keep her friends and family up to date on her whereabouts and activities during our trip to South America, Amanda decided to use her love of writing to start a travel blog, and journaling during this trip helped Ryan engage with deeper thoughts, like ideas for projects he would enjoy pursuing in the future. Creating gave us a great sense of purpose and accomplishment, and we know we will be able to keep gaining value from this content by having it to look back on in the future.

On this episode we talk about how we got started creating content on the road, how it gave us a great sense of purpose and accountability while traveling, and how it brought excitement to our adventures once we starting traveling with additional intention. We also discuss having confidence in knowing your experiences will provide value to others, the importance of creating for yourself first as opposed to creating in the hopes that others will engage with your content, a number of creative channels that work well with long term travel, and how starting a travel podcast has impacted our lives for the better.

Enjoy!

What we talk about in this episode:

  • The common problem of feeling like you lose out on your community when traveling long term
  • The value we’ve gained by creating while traveling
  • Our first trip where we didn’t plan to create content while traveling but implemented a practice of journaling
  • How journaling helped us to recap our days, and how much extra time you find you have while traveling where many things can happen
  • Amanda’s decision to start travel blogging during our trip to South America to try and give family and friends a more complete view of what we were up to and get some extra details bout our trip
  • How Amanda enjoyed the sense of purpose she gained from committing to the blog and the necessity of writing regular updates, and how happy she felt when she got her first email from someone she didn’t know saying they read the blog
  • Ryan’s evolution beyond journaling about what we were doing and where we were going to include deeper thoughts, and the value he got out of journaling in this way – like getting a better idea of what he liked and things he would enjoy pursuing
  • Experiencing and moving past the feeling of being unmotivated to create based on thinking people won’t be interested in listening to your story or what you are getting up to
  • The common idea that what we create needs to be for others, but that the content you create can lead to personal value gained either immediately or later in life, and will always be something you will have to look back on whether it engages others or not
  • The excitement that can come from traveling to places with additional intention like to capture good photos, learning a new language or try a new writing technique regarding your experiences
  • The time advantage you get from travel that can allow you to pick up a new skill or rediscover something you used to enjoy doing
  • Finding a balance between creating for yourself, following through on the content creation goals you set, and not being afraid to change direction to discover what you truly like for yourself
  • How Amanda set blog content goals for herself and structured the amount content that went in each blog post
  • The accountability that content creation for others (like a blog or podcast) gives you as opposed to aiming for one goal at the end of the trip or creating only for yourself
  • How more commitment is required nowadays to regularly create content while traveling as you are able to keep busy by staying connected to your life at home by connecting through social media and the internet, as compared to in the past where travel downtime forced you to introspect
  • Other channels creating can take besides online/digital, like making jewelry or other physical products
  • How starting our travel podcast has further enhanced our travel experiences, made our travel memories feel more tangible, led us to some incredible opportunities and new skills, and allowed us to make some interesting reflections on how our adventures have impacted our lives and personalities
